Moving or Transferring Internet Service

A move is a good time to compare keeping your provider with starting a different service. Better Connect’s nationwide concierge can help check the new address and coordinate a new-service request, but only your existing provider can approve a transfer, disconnect an old account or waive a charge. Treat the old address and new address as two separate tasks until both are confirmed.

How Better Connect helps

Better Connect is an independent nationwide internet concierge. We compare eligible options from Xfinity, Astound, Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, Brightspeed, EarthLink, Kinetic. Availability varies by address. Your provider manages billing, account changes, repairs and cancellation.

1. Check the destination before transferring

A provider that serves your current home may not serve the new one, even within the same city. Submit the full new address including the unit. Ask the property manager about existing service, approved providers, fiber access and whether internet is included in rent.

If the current provider is available, ask for a transfer quote and compare it with a new-service quote for other eligible providers. Do not assume new-customer promotions are available on a transfer or that moving automatically ends a contract without fees.

2. Build a connection timeline

Decide the last day you need the old connection and the first day you need the new one. If you work from home, arrange a short overlap when possible and confirm any duplicate billing. Keep a hotspot or another backup available for installation delays.

Request the new installation early enough to allow for building access and equipment delivery. A moving date entered in a form is a preference, not proof that a technician has been reserved. Save the provider’s confirmed appointment.

3. Know what can and cannot move with you

Ask the provider whether your modem, router or fiber equipment should be moved, returned or left installed. A fiber terminal mounted in the home often belongs with that address; do not remove fixed equipment without the provider’s instructions.

If you want to keep a home phone number, ask the receiving provider about portability before disconnecting the old line. Never cancel a number you want to port until the transfer is complete. TV packages and local channels can change with the destination.

4. Compare costs without losing existing benefits

Review the transfer or activation fee, new monthly rate, equipment and promotional duration. Ask whether a move changes a price guarantee, reward eligibility, mobile bundle discount or remaining commitment. The catalog examples below are starting points, not a transfer entitlement.

If switching internet providers affects a discounted mobile line, compare the new combined internet-plus-mobile total. A lower internet price may not save money if a separate mobile discount ends.

5. Close the old account carefully

After the new service works, confirm the old account’s disconnect date directly with the provider. Ask whether the final period is prorated, which equipment must be returned and the return deadline. Keep serial numbers and a tracked receipt.

Update your mailing address on the old account so the final bill or credit reaches you. Check the next statement for continued service charges, unreturned-equipment fees or a remaining device balance. Better Connect can help you organize the questions, but a provider must issue any refund or adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

Can Better Connect transfer my existing account?

Better Connect can help check options and prepare a new-service request. Your current provider must authorize an account transfer or cancellation, and may require the account holder to complete it directly.

Will my current price follow me to the new address?

Not necessarily. Availability, transfer rules and promotions can differ by address and account status. Get the new rate and any remaining price-lock protection in writing.

Should I cancel before the new service is installed?

If continuity matters, test the new connection before disconnecting the old one where possible. Confirm overlap costs and avoid cancelling a phone number before a requested port completes.

Can I take the router with me?

Only if the provider says to do so. Some equipment is account-specific or must be returned, and fixed fiber equipment may need to remain at the property.

What if there is no connection at the new building?

Ask the provider whether a technician, wiring work or property-owner permission is needed. Better Connect can compare alternatives, but construction timelines and installation approval belong to the provider and property owner.

Which providers can you compare for my move?

Better Connect’s options include Xfinity, Astound, Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, Brightspeed, EarthLink and Kinetic, depending on the destination. The full new address determines which offers can be ordered.
