Cancel, Downgrade or Switch Internet Service

If a bill is too high or the plan no longer fits, compare a downgrade with switching before disconnecting. Better Connect’s nationwide concierge can help review alternatives and coordinate a new-service request, but only your current provider can confirm a downgrade, cancellation date, refund or release from an agreement. A new order does not cancel the old account.

How Better Connect helps

Better Connect is an independent nationwide internet concierge. We compare eligible options from Xfinity, Astound, Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, Brightspeed, EarthLink, Kinetic. Availability varies by address. Your provider manages billing, account changes, repairs and cancellation.

1. Decide what needs to change

Identify the reason: monthly cost, unused TV channels, a speed tier you do not need, poor Wi-Fi or unreliable incoming service. Removing an add-on or fixing equipment may solve the problem without replacing the entire connection.

Ask your current provider for a lower-tier quote and the resulting combined bill. Compare that with address-qualified alternatives. A public new-customer rate may not apply to your existing account, and a downgrade can end a bundle discount or price guarantee.

2. Calculate the full change cost

Check any remaining service commitment, early termination fee, equipment obligation and mobile device balance. Ask whether the final billing period is prorated and when the disconnect takes effect. Do not assume an unused part of the month will be refunded.

Use the live examples below to explore alternatives, not as guaranteed replacement quotes. Spectrum prices are address-dependent. For staged introductory offers, compare the ongoing price and required conditions rather than a free-month headline.

3. Protect continuity and phone numbers

If switching, have the new connection installed and tested before ending the old one when possible. Confirm whether a short overlap creates another billing period and keep a backup connection if uninterrupted internet is important.

If a home or mobile phone number must be ported, keep it active until the receiving provider confirms completion. Cancelling too soon can jeopardize the number. Ask how removing internet affects any linked mobile line or promotional credit.

4. Request the change from the authorized provider team

Use the provider’s verified cancellation or account-management channel and have the account holder available for required verification. State the service address, requested change and desired effective date. Ask for a written confirmation and reference number.

Submitting a Better Connect form, closing a browser page, removing AutoPay or returning a router does not by itself cancel service. Better Connect cannot override the provider’s authorization requirements or promise that a cancellation request has been processed.

5. Return equipment and check the final bill

Get a list of items to return, the accepted return method and the deadline. Save photographs of serial numbers, shipping tracking and the provider or carrier receipt. Do not remove fixed property equipment unless the provider instructs you to do so.

Check the final statement for continuing charges, device balances, credits and unreturned-equipment fees. Keep access to the account long enough to resolve the final balance. Better Connect can compare Xfinity, Astound, Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, Brightspeed, EarthLink and Kinetic where available, but the old provider must settle its account.

Frequently asked questions

Can Better Connect cancel my existing internet?

The account holder must follow the current provider’s verified cancellation process. Better Connect can help compare replacements and organize questions, but a new order or concierge conversation does not cancel service.

Will downgrading save the full difference between advertised tiers?

Not necessarily. Existing-customer pricing, bundle discounts, equipment and price guarantees can change. Ask for the total new recurring bill before approving the downgrade.

Will I owe an early termination fee?

That depends on the agreement you accepted. Even without an annual contract, a final billing period, equipment charge or device financing balance can remain payable.

Can I keep my phone number when switching?

Ask the receiving provider about porting before cancelling. Keep the old number active until the port is complete and use the provider’s secure process for any required transfer credentials.

Does returning equipment cancel the account?

Do not assume so. Obtain a separate cancellation confirmation, then follow the equipment-return instructions and keep your receipt.

What if the provider charges me after cancellation?

Compare the charge dates with your effective cancellation date and any final obligations. Contact the provider with the confirmation, case number and return evidence to request an explanation or correction.
